Victoria Dobbie talks about the aesthetic conference program, held by merz in Istanbul. This Merz summit was the largest ever with delegates from across the globe sharing their vast experience of injectable and Ultherapy skin tightening treatments. I was privileged to be invited as part of the UK contingent and had a few hours before the conference to get a taste of a fascinating city.

Merz exceeds expectations yet again, the quality of the aesthetic conference program, the choice of Istanbul and the legendary hospitality.

Merz creates an immersive experience for their invited delegates that are second to none.  This summit was the largest ever with delegates from across the globe sharing their vast experience of injectable and Ultherapy skin tightening treatments. I was privileged to be invited as part of the UK contingent and had a few hours before the conference to get a taste of a fascinating city.

Istanbul

Istanbul is a frenetic city, that fills your senses - definitely East meets West. My manic taxi driver dropped me at the Grand Bazar where the smell from the spice shops, the colourful ceramics and the soft leather coats and bags are all very enticing. The customer service is a little too smothering for my very British taste. So I escaped without buying to a courtyard for some space and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice.  The mosque was packed for Friday pray and men were knelt in worship on the mosque steps.  Refreshed, and after the masses had left the mosque, I headed to Hagia Sophia. On the way I had tea in a Turkish carpet store and left swiftly when I was being offered extras with the carpet.

Hagia Sofia was built as a Byzantium church, but then was a mosque for many years. It is no longer a place of worship and the contrasting ideologies of Christianity and Islam have damaged the original iconoclastic images. Hagia Sofia is a fascinating insight into Istanbul’s unique history. The Blue Mosque built across the courtyard for the Hagia Sofia by contrast is a very active place of worship and is only open for short periods on a Friday. The blue mosaics are incredibly beautiful and the architecture is light and airy. It’s been over 10 years since I worked in a Muslim country and wore a head dress - so it brought back many memories.

Conference

Experts demonstrate the latest techniquesThe conference program was really well balanced, starting with an energetic leap into the world of mobile devices and modern day communications. Then a thought provoking presentation on how mobile images influence mainly the younger generation, but also our own perception of ourselves in this beautiful world. Arthur Swift (internationally recognised renowned plastic surgeon) followed with a presentation on beauty, how it is measurable and can be created. I already incorporated the Phi ratio in to my work and always aim to take my patients closer to Phi so making you more balanced, harmonious and beautiful. Arthur is always inspiring and I have taken away some top tips from his presentation and demonstrations that I will incorporated into my treatments.

Demonstrations of techniques filled the afternoon sessions with debates about were to treat safely, how to get the best results from the smallest amount of product and truly understaning anatomy. Tips from Dutch, Canadian, German, Brazilian, Korean and American Drs will again improve my clinical practice. However, I am selective - not everyone’s technique was respectful of the skin and patients comfort. I opt for minimally invasive techniques were possible, so my patients can go out that night and back to work the following day.

Ultherapy

UltherapyHigh on my agenda was the Ultherapy symposium, which opened with a very clear, concise presentation on the scientific studies behind Ulthera. I have had the Ulthera system in my practice for 12 months so It was an amazingly experience to be surrounded by Plastic surgeons and Dermatologists who have had years of experience treating thousands of patients in their practices form America to Korea. Dr Sabrina Fabi’s practice in California explained why her patients love Ultherapy “My patients want a very natural result that gradually makes them look more youthful” “there are no reported serious side effects, so it is a safe and effective option” Sabrina’s practice has provided some of the research that lead to Ultherapy being FDA approved for chest wrinkles and they have seen a lifting of 2cm in breasts up to a C cup. The symposium finished up with incredibly impressive results from body treatments lifting and tightening bottom and knees I had a really interesting chat with Sabrina afterwards and she shared some top tips on how to achieve those wow results. With Ultherapy - it is the way that you do it and that’s what gets results!

Merz Surpirses

Basilica Cistern evening functionI love surprises and Merz entertained us fabulously with a surprise party on the Saturday night. Rumours about the venue build in the seminars at lunch and even in the lifts. The venue astonished,  it was the historic Basilica Cistern which was built in the 6AD could hold up to 80,000 cubic meters of water for the then city of Constantinople - so HUGE!  A champagne reception followed by a delightful meal a mezze of Turkish treats to trill the palate.  Then dancing into the wee hours, one well known Plastic Surgeon was even column dancing. I am sure the ancients would have approved.
