Just as you would spring clean your house and swap your winter wardrobe with lighter clothing, it’s important to update your skincare regime when better weather arrives. Cold wintry weather can leave your skin dry, itchy and irritated whilst in the warmer months, cell turnover speeds up which can lead to dull, lacklustre skin in need of some extra exfoliation. These changes in weather and environment mean a spring clean is essential to achieve healthy skin, especially if you have a skin concern you are working on.

So as the weather warms up, check out our top tips on how to spring clean your skincare routine and achieve healthy, glowing skin.

Exfoliate for a healthy glow

Exfoliating can clear away dry, dead skin cells after winter, leaving you with a dewy glow. Gentle exfoliation once a week will help your skin absorb moisturiser better, as well as balancing out your skin tone.  If you use self-tan to help you on your way to glowing skin, the good news is that not only will application be easier, it will last longer.  However, if you suffer from rosacea, try to avoid too much scrubbing or grainy-textured products that may irritate your skin.  We love Alumier's Bright and Clear Solution; it's a true all-rounder packed with ingredients that work hard for you.  It's great for brightening the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Let your skin breathe

Now is an ideal time to let your skin breathe and lighten up on the make-up front. Warmer weather can increase your chances of sweating, which in turn can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Our top tip? Limit your use of foundation as part of your spring skincare routine. To prevent clogged pores and foundation sitting on dry skin and in fine lines, stick to a lighter foundation or skip it altogether. Your skin will thank you for it!

Prep your peepers

Try applying your eye cream in the evening rather than in the morning. This will give the ingredients time to work with your skin overnight – and whilst eye cream is the final step in a lot of skincare regimes, try putting it on before your moisturiser so it’s going directly on to bare skin.

We can’t forget to mention hay fever and the havoc that pollen can play with our eyes. Excessive rubbing can cause irritated, puffy eyes.  To help reduce this, why not give yourself a gentle massage around the eye area? Using your ring finger, gently massage the skin along the eye bone.  To make it even more effective, pop some eye cream on your finger and massage it as above. If you're looking for an eye cream that makes you look like you haven't been tired since 2008, Alumier's Alumi-Eye is the one; it's silky formula helps improve firmness and elasticity whilst minimising the appearance of puffiness, dark circles and fine lines.

Sun protection is key

Sun damage plays the greatest role in the appearance of ageing as it directly leads to freckles, sun spots, pigmentation and wrinkles. Whilst wearing sun protection all year round should be non-negotiable, ramp up your protection to at least SPF30 during spring and summer months. We love and recommend Heliocare because of its advanced broad-spectrum protection, and wide variety of products that cater to all skin types.

Remember to re-apply throughout the day, covering your face, arms, legs, neck, chest, and any other areas exposed to the sun.  However, newsflash! Don't totally avoid the sun as it plays an important role in helping your body create Vitamin D, which is essential in keeping you healthy and in a positive frame of mind.

Clean make-up brushes = clean skin!

Make-up brushes can quickly build up spot-causing bacteria if not kept clean - they also accumulate dead skin cells and oil which can further clog your pores. An added benefit of clean make-up brushes is that your make-up will work harder for you. Eyeshadows retain their colour better and clean bristles will ensure a smooth application of products, meaning no streaks or patches. All you need is a spare half hour to give your brushes a deep clean, leaving them to dry flat in a warm spot. A top tip from Becky? Use shampoo!  Apply a blob to your palm and with a dry brush, swish it around. Add some water until it lathers then rinse. Works a treat!

Following these tips will be a sure-fire way of ensuring you head into the warmer months with a spring in your step and healthy, glowing skin to match!
