STEREX Electrolysis Skin & Hair Treatments

STEREX electrolysis treatments can be used to remove skin growths, skin blemishes and unwanted hair. Results are often instantaneous and involve minimal downtime.

What can electrolysis treat?

Electrolysis is now used to safely treat 21 different skin problems, but the most common are:

  • Thread veins and spider naevus
  • Blood spots and cherry angiomas
  • Skin tags and milia
  • Common, plantar and seborrhoeic warts
  • Mole reduction and hairs in moles
  • Unwanted grey and white hair

How does electrolysis work?

We use four forms of electrolysis treatment, all of which use disposable sterile electrolysis probes inserted into the skin or hair follicle.

Galvanic Electrolysis
Galvanic electrolysis uses a tiny DC electrical current. When the sterile probe is inserted, the electricity from the probe causes a chemical reaction in the salt and water of the skin surrounding the probe which produces a small amount of sodium hydroxide. The sodium hydroxide destroys the cells being targeted and in particular those that cause hair growth.
Thermolysis  / Diathermy / Short Wave Electrolysis
Thermolysis electrolysis, also known as diathermy or short wave, uses a tiny AC electrical current. This procedure uses heat and cauterisation to treat hair and skin blemishes.
Blend Electrolysis
This method combines Galvanic and Thermolysis procedures, so sodium hydroxide and heat are combined to destroy cells.

What happens during an electrolysis treatment?

At your consultation Becky will conduct a test patch to gauge your skin's reaction to the treatment and use this to determine a treatment plan. If you need multiple treatments sufficient space will be left between each to allow your skin to recover.  The number of treatments required will vary depending on the proliferation of the skin concern.

Immediately after treatment the treated area will be red and feel hot. A dressing may be applied  to promote skin recovery.  During recovery you should apply, with fresh cotton pads, the STEREX Witch Hazel to help prevent infection and the Aloe Vera gel to soothe and promote healing.

You can return to work and normal activities immediately after a treatment, but you should avoid for 48 hours: extreme temperatures, swimming pools, spas and skin sensitisers such as perfume, fake tan and jewellery on the area.

Is electrolysis safe?

Electrolysis has been used as a treatment for over 100 years and so is very well understood. STEREX invented the disposable sterile electrolysis probe in 1982, which revolutionised patient safety and modern treatments have an extremely strong safety record. STEREX quality and training continues to make it the world leader in electrolysis.

Our electrologists Becky and Steph are qualified in STEREX advanced cosmetic procedures and transgender treatments with over 5 years experience. Becky's skill and reassuring manner will put you at ease, minimise discomfort and ensure your treatment is a success.

Before you can have a treatment you will have a consultation and test patch with Becky who will determine if electrolysis is safe and appropriate for your concern.

What are common side effects?

Most patients experience redness on the treated area for up to 48 hours. Skin crusting maybe be visible for up to 14 days. It is important that you do not pick any crusting that forms as do so can lead to pigment changes or scarring. Leave the crusting to fall away naturally.

Who should not have electrolysis?

Any one who is healthy and does not have any skin diseases or active infections can be treated. However, during the consultation should we have concerns regarding malignancies or skin cancer we will ask you to see your GP to check them before we start any treatment.

How do I find out if this treatment is suitable for me?
Arrange a 30 minute consultation with our team - who will examine your concern, check your medical history and then recommend an appropriate treatment plan whilst explaining the cost and any associated risks.
